Enjoy the Great Little Trains of North Wales
The Craig Ddu bed and breakfast provides a perfect base for a visit to the famous great little trains of North Wales. Blaenau Ffestiniog is the starting point of one of the oldest and most famous of these magnificent narrow-gauge railways – the Ffestiniog Railway and West Highland Railway. A trip on this railway is certain to be a highlight of your stay in the Gwynedd area of North Wales. The mountain, river and sea scenery you see from the train is literally breathtaking. The old-fashioned steam locomotives and quaint country stations conjure up the atmosphere of years gone by. For the energetic, the Ffestiniog Railway takes you into the heart of Snowdonia hiking country. For those who prefer to sit back and relax, this ride through one of the most beautiful corners of Britain makes an ideal day out.
From Blaenau Ffestiniog to Caernarfon by Train
Although the large number of tourists visiting the Ffestiniog Railway makes it look like the line was made for pleasure trips, it was actually built as a goods line. The idea behind this railway was to provide an easy way to transport slate from quarries around Blaenau Ffestiniog to the West Coast of Wales at Porthmadog Harbour. The original line was horse-powered but in the 1860s steam locomotives were introduced. Believe it or not three of the original steam engines have survived and you might well see them in action pulling your train.
After the slate industry declined in the first half of the twentieth century the railway was in danger of closing. A group of dedicated enthusiasts saved the line. Over recent years it has become a tourist attraction of international standing. A short while ago the Ffestiniog Railway was linked with the newly re-laid West Highland Railway. This makes it possible to travel the 13.5 miles westwards from Blaenau Ffestiniog to the sea, and then continue for 25 miles northwards past Mount Snowdon to the historic royal town of Caernarfon.
As well as the Ffestiniog Railway, you can also enjoy a trip along the modern Conwy Valley Railway. This line runs between Blaenau Ffestiniog and the popular seaside resort of Llandudno. From the comfort of the carriage you have a panoramic view over the River Conwy. The attractions of Llandudno’s beaches and promenades offer a perfect holiday destination at the end of the line.
